The title of a TV show, streaming original or theatrical film is its first touchpoint for its target audiences. A compelling title can enhance discoverability of content across platforms, and also works as a force multiplier for the property's appeal among audiences. Titles must stand out in today's cluttered landscape, while communicating the essence of the content effectively.
Speaking about the importance of selecting a good title, acclaimed director Christopher Nolan once said: "For me, titles are very tricky to be too self-conscious about. You’re looking for a way of expressing something about the film. To a certain extent, it’s a branding exercise on larger-scale films. I’ve always gravitated towards the simplest version of something that gets it across."
Over 16.5 years, we have been extensively testing titles for films, TV shows, and web-series, for TV channels, studios, and OTT platforms. Such research entails evaluating a set of title options on their attractiveness (Appeal) and their suitability (Fit) for the story, theme, and genre of the property. Title testing research is quick and easy to execute, and entails low investment. Title testing research reduces subjective decision-making, with focus on selecting a title based on audience data, among options shortlisted by the creators/marketers of the property.
